Brendan Keller scored for the second-straight game in the 72nd minute to tie the match at 1-1 after Gwynedd Mercy registered an early tally. Keller's goal forced overtime after the Highlanders controlled the majority of the second-half. After a scoreless first overtime period the Griffins found a goal off the foot of Danny Saba in the second overtime period to down the Highlanders by a 2-1 final.
The 2-1 loss is the third defeat by that margin in the last four games for the Highlanders. All three of those losses have come in overtime.
The Griffins found the back of the net in just the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The goals came on Gwynedd Mercy's first shot of the contest. Matt Saba found his third goal of the season off an assist from his brother Danny Saba.
The Highlanders found their equalizer in the 72nd minute off the foot of Brandan Keller. Keller won a 50/50 with the Gwynedd Mercy goalkeeper, who had come off his line, and hit it over his head for his fourth goal of the season. It also marked is second-straight game with a goal.
With the game knotted at 1-1, the Highlanders and Griffins went to overtime. Each team took one shot in the first overtime period with
Brett Kikendall sending a shot high over the bar in the 93rd minute and
Mark Heater making on of his six saves in the match in the 98th minute.
In the second overtime period the Griffins found their game-winner off the foot of Danny Saba. Saba's goal was his fourth career overtime game winner. His goal came after a throw-in was put into the box and the Highlanders were unable to clear the threat and the ball found the foot of Saba for his ninth goal of the season.
The third overtime loss in the last two weeks continues the heartbreak for the Highlanders this season. Cairn has been outscored on the season by just five goals (30-25) but owns by a 4-9-1 record.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 0-4-0 in the CSAC this season with three of their losses coming in overtime by 2-1 finals.
The Highlanders will next take the pitch on Saturday when they host Marywood at 3:00 p.m.
