Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Nelson's Overtime Tally Pushes Cairn Past Pacers

Langhorne, PA - Another game. Another overtime. A different result.

Saturday afternoon's match against Marywood ended in overtime, just as you might expect if you've been following the Cairn men's soccer team recently. In the last two weeks, the Highlanders have played five CSAC matches and four of them have lasted longer than the scheduled 90 minutes.

To the delight of head coach Luke Gibson, Saturday's match had a slightly different ending than Cairn's first four conference matches.

In the 94th minute Zack Nelson broke a scoreless match when he connected on a strike from outside the box to give the Highlanders a 1-0 overtime victory over the Marywood Pacers.

Brett Kikendall assisted Nelson with the goal. Kikendall played a ball square to Nelson on the left-side where he fired a shot to the far post from 25 yards out for his fourth goal of the season.

Nelson's goal came with the Highlanders up a man after Nick Dryer was ejected from the match after his second yellow card in the 88th minute. Dryer's removal from the match was the culmination of an extremely physical battle between the Highlanders and Pacers. In the match there were 21 fouls, four yellow cards, and the one red card.

Outside of the physical nature of the match, the Highlanders controlled the majority of play on the pitch. Cairn held a 21-12 lead in shots throughout the match, putting five shots on frame against the Pacers zero.

Both the Highlanders and the Pacers took eight shots each in the first-half. Of the 16 shots in the period, only two went on frame. The first was an attempt from Brett Kikendall in the 18th minute and the second came less than two minutes later off the head of Paul Franco in the 19th minute.

As mentioned the Highlanders controlled the pace of play for the majority of the afternoon. At times Cairn played very direct and pushed forward with a long ball over the top. When these passes found their mark of Nelson or Brendan Keller, the Highlanders did have some success and put together some dangerous offensive chances. Other times Cairn was content to build up offensive momentum through the midfield with strong play from Connor Eby and Kikendall.

In the end it was a square pass from Kikendall that found Nelson on the left-side who took a rip from downtown to end a five-game losing skid for the Highlanders.

The win moves Cairn to 5-9-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the CSAC. Cairn has now been a part of 10 matches decided by one goal or less this season. In those matches Cairn is 3-6-1.

Cairn moves to 1-3-1 this season in games that have gone to overtime.

Cairn will next take the field on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. when they travel to Centenary in a match that is scheduled for 90 minutes, but is sure to go longer.
