Radnor, PA – The Cairn men's soccer team fell on the road on Wednesday afternoon by a 7-0 final against the Cabrini Cavaliers. Cairn generated a number of quality chances in the first-half but could not find the elusive goal. Cabrini on the other had connected for a pair of goals in the first-half and five more after the break for their largest scoring outburst on the season.
It looked as if the Cavaliers were going to dent the scoreboard in the opening minutes when AJ Bishop took a shot from just outside the six, but Cairn keeper,
Grant Grogan - making his first career appearance - made the save to keep the game scoreless.
While Brenden Keller picked up the first Cairn shot in the 10th minute, the first quality opportunity for the Highlanders came in the 20th minute. On a free kick from the right-corner of the box extended,
Brett Kikendall sent a ball to the far post but it was out of range for any of his teammates and went harmlessly into the Cabrini keeper's hands.
Just three minutes later Cairn had a corner that was cleared away by the Cabrini backline. Off the clearance of the corner, the Cavaliers but together a dangerous counter with a pass beautifully laid off to Jared Irwin on the right-side. Irwin took a rip from the top of the 18 to the far post. His shot rattled off the left post and was cleared away by Cairn.
In the 33rd minute, Cabrini would find their first goal of the afternoon. The Cavaliers sent a long throw into the box but the Highlanders extracted the ball from the box with a long clear. The clear went back the Cabrini and they quickly moved back into the attacking third. A chip ahead by Andre Justin found the foot of Bobby Kane and Kane chipped a ball over Grogan who had left his line to play the first ball. Kane's shot found the net and gave Cabrini a 1-0 lead.
Looking for the equalizer,
Brendan Keller had a shot just a minute later to the left post, but his attempt was saved. In the 40th minute a yellow card was given to Cabrini and set the Highlanders up with a free kick inside of midfield. The kick was taken by
Brett Kikendall and found the head of Keller but his shot went just outside the right post.
Moments later Cabrini doubled their lead with a through ball slotted by Salvatore Zampirri to Richard Montesdeoca in the 41st minute. Montesdeoca ran onto the ball and found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Cabrini took the two goal advantage into the break and quickly doubled the advantage again less than four minutes into the second-half. Goals by Jared Irwin and Bobby Kane in the 48th and 49th minute took the wind out of the Cairn sails. Cabrini scored goals in the 58th, 67th, and 87th minutes to round out the scoring.
Cairn mustered just one shot in the second-half off the foot of
Connor Eby in the 77th minute, but it went wide.
For Cabrini, five different players tallied with Montesdeoca and Kane scoring braces.
The loss drops Cairn to 0-2-0 in the CSAC and 4-7-1 overall. The Highlanders will next take the pitch at home on Oct. 8 when they host Keystone College. Game time slated for 3:00 p.m.
