Allentown, PA -
Hannah Morrison scored in the 35th minute and
Meghan Wilson tallied in the 77th minute, but the pair of goals weren't enough to push the Highlanders past the Cedar Crest Falcons on Saturday afternoon. After a 90-minute regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the Highlanders and Falcons played to a 2-2 draw.
Wilson has now scored in six-straight games while Morrison has connected in each of the last two.
The Falcons opened the game with a goal on their first shot of the afternoon with a breakaway. Allison Rittle streaked ahead on the breakaway and pushed a shot past Cairn goalie
Payton Emerick on the right-side for the tally.
The Highlanders were now looking for the equalizer but struggled to generate many dangerous opportunities. Over the next 14 minutes, Cairn mustered a pair of shots, one by
Katie Ruitto (high) and another by
Natalie Lyon that was saved.
After trailing for 27 minutes, the Highlanders found their equalizer off the foot of
Hannah Morrison in the 34th minute. It was Morrison's third goal of the season and second in as many games.
Meghan Wilson had three attempts before the break, but all three shots sailed wide and the score stood level at 1-1 into the second-half.
After the break the Highlanders controlled the opening portion of the second-half, firing three shots in the first seven minutes. All three attempts went on frame, but they were saved by Cara Montanye to keep the game knotted at one apiece.
The tide turned when Cedar Crest took five shots in a two minute stretch. The flurry of activity forced Emerick to make her fourth save on the afternoon in the 59th minute.
In the 64th minute the Falcons pushed through a goal to once again regain a one goal lead.
Just as they had done in the first-half, Cairn battled back and found an equalizer just a few minutes later. In the 77th minute,
Meghan Wilson scored her 11th goal of the season to tie the match at 2-2.
Both teams had chances at the end of regulation but, neither could net a game winner and the match headed to overtime.
In the first overtime the Falcons had the run of play, taking three shots in the period. They couldn't find the back of the net and the game went to a second, and final, overtime. This time it was Cairn that controlled play. The Highlanders took the only three shots of the period but
Courtney Novak's shot was saved and shots by Wilson and
Katie Ruitto both went high and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
The draw is the first for the Highlanders since a 1-1 tie on Homecoming 2014 against the Keystone Giants on Oct. 4, 2014.
The Highlanders move to 4-7-1 on the season and 1-5-1 in the CSAC. Cairn will next take the pitch on Wednesday when they host Cabrini University at 3:30 p.m.
