Langhorne, PA - Ninety minutes was not enough as the Highlanders and visiting Neumann Knights battled into overtime in the night-cap of the Homecoming festivities. The Highlanders and Knights stood square at 1-1 heading into the extra period. Just 30 seconds into the first overtime period, Cairn goalie
Mark Heater took down a Knights' forward in the box and a penalty kick was awarded to Neumann.
On the play Heater received a red card and was removed from the game. On the ensuing penalty kick Abu Donzo stepped up for the Knights and buried the kick inside the left post for the 2-1 golden goal victory.
Cairn outplayed the Knights over the 90-plus minutes, but ended on the wrong side of the 2-1 decision. The Highlanders outshot the Knights 20-9 in the match.
Joey Weaver connected for the Cairn goal in the 30th minute to tie the match just 40 seconds after Neumann took a 1-0 lead off the head of Christian Cortese.
Neumann did draw first blood in the match with a controversial goal in the 29th minute. Abu Donzo sent a cross into the box from the right-side that found the head of Christian Cortese. Cortese, who the Cairn bench and defensive line insisted was off-sides, headed the cross toward the right-post and into the back of the net. When no flag was raised for off-sides, the Highlanders trailed 1-0.
The goal for the Knights went against the run of play, that had seen the Highlanders take three shots in the minutes preceding the goal.
It all came around for the Highlanders as less than a minute later Cairn tickled the twine off the foot of
Joey Weaver. On a free kick from the right-corner of the box extended,
Brett Kikendall played quickly and found Weaver with a pass. Weaver took a touch to his left and then fired a shot from 18-yards out for the equalizer.
Over the final 15 minutes of the half, neither team could find the back of the net, though the Highlanders had their opportunities. In the 32nd minute
Zack Nelson sent a shot high over the crossbar and in the 40th minute
Brendan Keller rattled a shot off crossbar. Despite the excitement and near misses for the Highlanders, the score stood square heading to the half.
After the break, the Highlanders continued to pressure and held the majority of possession throughout the half. Cairn took 13 shots in the second-half against just six for the visitors. The 13 shots from Cairn resulted in six saves from the Neumann keeper Dan Jones.
Jones kept the Highlanders off the board in the second-half as did Cairn keeper
Mark Heater, who had to make saves in the 62nd and 68th minute.
With the score level at the end of regulation, overtime was in the cards for these CSAC foes. With two 10 minute overtime periods scheduled, the Knights would need just 35 seconds to break the tie and end the match.
Cairn started with the ball to begin the overtime, but quickly turned it over in the midfield. Neumann pushed forward with a lofted ball over the Cairn backline. Heater came up to play the ball out of danger on the left-side of the box but took down a Knight in the box to give Neumann a penalty kick opportunity. Donzo converted the penalty for the Knights and Neumann went home with their first CSAC victory of the season.
It should be noted that the penalty kick was the second of the game. In the 78th minute the Highlanders had an opportunity from the penalty mark after
Connor Eby was taken down in the box, but the Neumann keeper came up with a huge save to keep the game scoreless.
On the match the Highlanders outshot the Knights 20-9, marking the first time the Highlanders outshot a team by 10 or more shots and lost since a 2-1 loss against Delaware Valley College on Sept. 12, 2011 (Cairn outshot the Aggies 21-6 in that match).
The loss drops the Highlanders to 4-6-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the CSAC. Cairn will next take the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Cabrini, first kick slated for 4:00 p.m.
