Langhorne, PA – Cairn University hosted Keystone College on Saturday afternoon where the Giants won their first game of the season, 69-66, in conference action. The Highlanders have now lost six games in a row after a 4-0 start to the season and are now 2-4 in the CSAC.
Cairn overcame a 34-28 deficit at the half and led by four with 13:18 left to play in the game. The two teams exchanged the lead from there up until the Giants went up 65-60 at the 3:08 mark.
With just over 30 seconds left and Keystone holding the 69-66 advantage, the Giants took the ball up the court only to turn it back over to the Highlanders with 10 seconds to go. Cairn took the ball up to half-court and called a timeout to draw up a play.
Unfortunately the play did not go as planned and the Highlanders put the Giants at the free-throw line. Tyreek Peeples gave the Highlanders another chance, however, after missing both free throws. Cairn quickly called timeout and the Highlanders were left with about five seconds to tie the game.
The Highlanders had to move the ball all the way up the court this time but it made its way into the hands of
JD Zamroz who put up a shot that was off the mark.
Overall,
Gerroid Doughty II led the team with 23 points on 8-13 shooting, including 3-5 from three-point range. Zamroz finished with another 15-point performance, followed by
Julian Collazo with 12 points.
Josh Vlna and
Jordan Koczman saw increased minutes in the game; Vlna finished with seven points, while Koczman had five rebounds.
Tyree Jones led the Giants with 17 points, followed by Deion Monroe and ShaShawn Drayton with 10 points each. Drayton led the rebounding effort with eight overall. Keystone led the Highlanders in points in the paint (50-30) as well as bench points (31-9).
With the loss, Cairn dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Keystone improved to 1-9 on the season and 1-4 in the CSAC with the win. The Highlanders will look to bounce back when they play at Marywood on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.
