Gophers Get Better Of Highlanders; Cairn Falls 5-1

Towson, MD – Cairn men's soccer traveled south to Goucher College on Wednesday afternoon where the Highlanders fell to the Gophers with a 5-1 score. The Gophers scored four goals in the second half to Cairn's one en route to the victory.

The Highlanders lone goal was scored by Connor Williams, his first of the season, on a cross from the right side by Ahron Park in the 65th minute of the game. The goal brought Cairn to within two at 3-1 but Goucher answered just minutes later with two of their own to spread the lead to four.

Goucher scored their first goal in the fourth minute of the game after Jeremy Hardy took a shot that was saved by Mark Heater. The rebound then came out to Drew Afromsky who hit a low shot to the right side of the net past Heater.

Both teams played evenly throughout the rest of the first half but the Gophers got back onto the scoreboard in the 54th minute. Drew Phillips guided a shot past new keeper Aaron Myers after a free kick was passed to him in the box. Goucher added another goal less than a minute later on another free kick play.

Following Cairn's goal, Goucher added one more goal on a free kick, this time a header by Drew Phillips. The Gophers tallied their final goal of the game less than two minutes after that on a goal by Marco Grotti. Goucher was led by Hardy and Bulanowski with three shots each.

The Highlanders were limited to just three shots in the game with two on goal. Andrew Gordon, Paul Franco, and Williams all had one shot each. Heater made six saves in the first half, while Myers finished with no saves in the second half.

Cairn dropped to 4-5-1 with the loss, while Goucher improved to 3-5-1 this season. The Highlanders will next host Summit University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Oct. 3, for Homecoming at 3 p.m.
