Langhorne, PA – The Highlanders faced off against the Cyclones of Centenary College and suffered a 1-0 setback in their first CSAC game of the season Saturday afternoon. Cairn dropped to 4-4-1 on the year with the loss, while Centenary improved to 4-4 overall with the win.
Centenary's lone goal was scored in the ninth minute of the game after the Cyclones were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Justin White stepped for the Cyclones and hit his shot down the center of the goal. Unfortunately
Mike Warren could not come up with the stop, like he did at Lancaster Bible earlier this season, but he did get a hand on it.
The Highlanders were not devoid of chances to get a goal back throughout the game, as they made good runs down the field with the ball, but could only get two shots on goal in 90 minutes. Both shots on goal for the Highlanders came from
Paul Franco.
Andrew Gordon and
Zack Nelson had two shots each in the game; Gordon had a good look in the second half with an open header in the middle of the box but it was put just wide of the net.
The Cyclones on the other hand were able to control a majority of the possession throughout and were able to work the ball from the defensive third to the attacking third with relative ease. Centenary could have had a couple more goals in the game but Warren's five saves kept them out of the net.
The physicality of the game also intensified throughout the second half, as the referee dished out four yellow cards and a red card in the second 45 minutes. Both teams ultimately kept their wits about them, but it appeared to affect both teams from a mentality standpoint.
Overall, the Cyclones led on shots 14-8 and on corner kicks 10-2. The Cyclones were led by Luis Marin with five shots, followed by Justin White and Sean Robinson with three each.
Cairn dropped to 0-1 in the conference with the loss, while Centenary will start CSAC play 1-0 this season. The Highlanders will switch back to non-conference play this Tuesday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Goucher College for a 4 p.m. game.
