Takoma Park, MD – The Highlanders went back into the win column this season with a 2-1 victory over Washington Adventist University on Tuesday evening with two goals from
Zack Nelson. Nelson netted the game winner with under seven minutes to play in the game on an assist from
Connor Eby.
Despite being outshot in the contest 18-8, the Highlanders took advantage of good opportunities and defeated the Shock on their home turf. Cairn had just three shots on goal, forcing the keeper to make one save in the game, but that was all they needed to get the win.
Paul Franco had the only other shot on goal for the Highlanders in the game.
Aaron Myers made six saves for the Highlanders in the second half, while
Mike Warren finished with two saves in the first half.
Zack Nelson was awarded his first goal of the season in the 20
th minute of the game after he found himself one-on-one with the keeper and chipped a ball over his head to the top right corner of the goal. Nelson's game winner came from the six-yard box near the inside post after a cross from
Connor Eby came through the 18-yard box.
The Shock had one more good opportunity to level the match before regulation was over; Chinedum Dike took a shot from inside the box but the shot was successfully deflected away by Myers.
The Highlanders improved to 4-3-1 on the season with the win, while the Shock dropped to 2-2-1 with the loss. Cairn will return to action this Saturday when they begin conference play and host Centenary College at 1 p.m.
