Langhorne, PA – Cairn University women's soccer opened their 2015 slate on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to the Wesley College Wolverines.
Laurisa Wager scored the Highlanders' only goal of the game on a long strike from outside of the 18-yard box.
After playing an even game for the first 15 minutes of the half to shake the first-game jitters off, Wesley's Janiah Moore started off the scoring in the 17
th minute. The Wolverines wasted no time getting back into the box after the restart and added another tally less than 30 seconds later.
Moore had her foot on every goal on the afternoon as she assisted on the second goal by Samantha Netterman and proceeded to score the remaining three herself. Wesley put away three goals in the first half and two more in the second.
Cairn had nine shots total in the game with four on-goal, while Wesley finished with 26 shots, 11 of which were on-frame.
Mackenzie Paugh was forced into making six saves throughout the game for the Highlanders.
The Wolverines scored their fourth goal shortly after the start of the second half but the Highlanders answered shortly after with Wager's first of the season. Wager collected the ball in the midfield on a short clearance by Wesley, took a few dribbles and hit a shot that sailed just under the crossbar over the keeper's hands.
The Highlanders had a few other chances to score throughout the second half including a couple long-distance shots from
Hannah Morrison.
Courtney Novak was also able to get a couple runs with the ball towards the net but neither player could capitalize.
With the loss, Cairn starts the new season 0-1 and will try to rebound when they host DeSales University this Friday, Sept. 4.
