Langhorne, PA – The Highlanders pulled off a comeback from 12-3 down to highlight their split in a doubleheader against CSAC foe Keystone College on Monday afternoon. Cairn University scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the comeback and tie the game at 12-12.
Joey Nieves-Markee then hit the walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.
The Highlanders were then beaten 14-3 in the second game of the doubleheader and moved to 6-13 overall, and 1-4 in conference play. The Giants went to 13-9 overall with the result and 1-3 in the CSAC. Jesse Arnold picked up the win for Keystone in the second game, while
Tyson Rohrs had the loss.
There were a total of 30 hits between the two teams in the first game. Nieves-Markee led the Highlanders, going 4-4 for the second game in a row.
Caleb Lang went 2-2 with three walks, three RBI, and three runs scored, and a homerun. Lang also came in to pitch in the eighth inning with the game tied and thus picked up the win from the mound.
Cairn scored seven of their eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs on the board. Additionally, four of those seven runs came from walks by the Giants' two different pitchers in the inning. The final two runs that tied the game came from a single by
Eric Hodges; his only hit of the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lang walked three runners but successfully put away three batters with groundouts to keep Keystone off the board.
Joffrey Rosa was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 8
th for the Highlanders. Rosa then advanced to second when
Zachary Vegh reached on an error by the first baseman while trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Rosa scored for the winning run when Nieves-Markee hit his single down the left field line.
Picking up two hits in the game for Cairn was
Tristan Ortega, who also had two runs scored.
Zachary Vegh and
Caleb Moore each had one hit; Vegh had two RBI and two runs scored, while Moore had three RBI and one run scored.
For Cairn, the win was their first against Keystone since 2007 when both teams competed in the NEAC. The Highlanders will finish the series with the Giants when they travel to La Plume, Pa., tomorrow for a 3 p.m. game.
