Brooklyn, NY – Cairn University baseball traveled to New York University to take on the Violets for their second doubleheader of the year and lost 10-4 and 3-0. Earlier in the season, the Highlanders hosted the Violets and lost both games of that doubleheader as well.
In the first game of the doubleheader,
Albert Taylor had his biggest game of the year going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Taylor previously had just three hits all season with no extra-base hits and no RBI. His first hit was a two-RBI double that gave Cairn the lead at 2-1 in the top of the second inning.
The Violets responded in the bottom of the inning, though, and scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead that they would carry into the fourth inning. NYU was led by Christian Bloom in the game who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, and one stolen base.
The Highlanders tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning when
Joey Nieves-Markee singled up the middle to score
Albert Taylor. Nieves-Markee then scored when
Caleb Moore hit a triple to right field. Nieves-Markee went 2-for-4 in the game with one run scored and one RBI.
Unfortunately, NYU responded once again in the bottom of the inning with two runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Violets added to their score in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs and won the game with a 10-4 final.
Tristan Ortega picked up the loss for the Highlanders, while Cameron Serapilio-Frank got the win for the Violets.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Highlanders' bats were subdued with Michael Vokulich on the mound. Vokulich pitched a complete-game shutout and allowed five hits from the Highlanders. The Violets scored three runs in the game on 11 hits.
Joey Nieves-Markee had another two hits, following up from the first game. The other three hits for the Highlanders belonged to
Albert Taylor,
Tristan Ortega, and
Joffrey Rosa.
The Violets scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning and got two more in the bottom of the fifth. NYU's first two runs were scored on sacrifice flies.
With the losses, Cairn dropped to 6-18 overall, while NYU improved to 11-18 in 2015. The Highlanders will next take on Marywood University for a three-game series starting this Friday, Apr. 17, at Cairn University.
