Immaculata, PA – The Highlanders traveled to Immaculata University this afternoon to finish out the three-game conference series and were beaten in nine innings by an 18-5 final score. Trevor O'Brien got the win for the Mighty Macs, while
Joey Nieves-Markee took the loss for the Highlanders.
Cairn struck first in the game with one run in the top of the first inning, thanks to a single to left field from
Caleb Lang, which scored Nieves-Markee. However, the Mighty Macs answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and took a 3-1 lead.
The Highlanders got right back in it though with an RBI single by
Zachary Vegh, scoring
Trent Fiori, in the top of the second. In the top of the third inning, Lang grounded out to the short stop but that again scored Nieves-Markee, tying the game at 3-3.
The two teams rode a 3-3 tie through the next two innings but the Mighty Macs found their bats in the fifth and scored five runs to open up an 8-3 advantage. Lang attempted to bring the team back into the game with a solo homerun in the top of the sixth, which brought the deficit to 8-4.
Immaculata again found a way to increase their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored eight runs on seven hits. The Mighty Macs took a 16-4 lead after the inning to put the game out of reach for the Highlanders.
Lang added one more run in the top of the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Nieves-Markee one more time. The duo combined to go 4-6 on the day with four runs scored and four RBI.
With the loss, Cairn dropped to 6-16 overall and 1-7 in the conference. Immaculata improved to 11-8 overall and 6-3 in the CSAC. The Highlanders will next play on Tuesday, Apr. 14, at New York University for a non-conference doubleheader.
