Doubleheader Goes To Gwynedd Mercy In CSAC Play

Langhorne, PA – The Cairn Highlanders finished out their two day series with the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins this afternoon and lost both games of the doubleheader. Cairn kept the first game as close as they could but Gwynedd Mercy won the game in the seventh inning on a walk-off single, 4-3.
 
The second game of the doubleheader favored the Griffins as they out-hit the Highlanders 12-5 and won 6-1. The Griffins improved their overall record to 3-6 with the two wins, while Cairn fell to 4-11 in 2015.
 
In the first game, Trent Fiori went 2-3 to lead the team in hits. Joey Nieves-Markee had one hit with one RBI and one run scored. Nieves-Markee picked up the game-tying RBI in the seventh inning on a grounder to the short stop that scored Caleb Moore.
 
The Highlanders scored first in the game when Mike Boucher scored in the third inning off of Tristan Ortega's grounder to the second baseman. Cairn then came from behind to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth with a double by Caleb Lang that scored Nieves-Markee.
 
However, Cairn was not able to go ahead in the fifth or the seventh, which allowed Gwynedd Mercy the opportunity to go ahead in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Beau Fleming. The walk-off brought home David Blount for the win.
 
Albert Taylor picked up the loss from the mound for the Highlanders, while Matt Rakus got the win for the Griffins. Taylor struck out five batters and walked five; Rakus had four strikeouts and three walks.
 
In game two of the doubleheader, Gwynedd Mercy had 12 hits; five batters recorded two hits each. Furthermore, three different players had two RBI each in the game. Caleb Lang led the Highlanders in game two, going 2-3 with one walk. Caleb Moore scored Cairn's only run in the game.
 
Ben Chapman started the game for Cairn and pitched four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Chapman was taken out for John Burlaga who finished out the inning. Caleb Lang finished out the game from the mound for the last inning.
 
Cairn will next play on Monday, Mar. 30, when they host Stockton University for a single game at 3 p.m.
