Langhorne, PA – Cairn University hosted Baptist Bible College on Wednesday afternoon and bested the Defenders in both games of the doubleheader (8-3, 6-1).
Joey Nieves-Markee picked up the win on the mound in the first game, while
Matt Trotman earned a win in the second game.
Game one opened up in Cairn's favor with
Tristan Ortega hitting a double that brought in
Caleb Moore. With Ortega on base,
Caleb Lang stepped up to hit his third homerun this season and increase the Highlanders' lead to 3-0.
Later on in the sixth inning,
Trent Fiori got things going with a single to right field to bring home
John Burlaga and
Caleb Lang. Another two runs came across the plate in the sixth when
Joey Nieves-Markee singled to left center. That hit scored Fiori and
Zachary Vegh and increased Cairn's lead to 7-1.
Nieves-Markee finished with nine strikeouts, five walks, and three earned runs. His opposition, Patrick Barrios, had four strikeouts with six earned runs. Nieves-Markee was brought out in the seventh inning for
Ben Chapman who collected the last two outs for the Highlanders of game one.
Trent Fiori and
Caleb Lang went 2-4 in game one; Fiori had three RBI while Lang scored three runs along with his homer.
Tristan Ortega and
Caleb Moore also had two hits in the game.
The trio of Lang, Fiori, and Moore continued their strong hitting into the second game. Combined, those three Highlanders went 7-9 and scored four of the six runs. Lang Hit three RBI in game two; one on a sacrifice fly and the other two on a single in the sixth inning.
Cairn held Baptist Bible scoreless through five and a half innings, only allowing five hits in the game. Helping to keep the defenders off the board was
Joey Nieves-Markee in the bottom of the first inning when Patrick barrios hit a line drive out to left field. Nieves-Markee got on his horse and made an excellent diving grab to get the out and quickly through over to second base for a double play.
The Defenders scored one run in the sixth inning but Lang came in to close out the game in the seventh and keep them from collecting any more.
Matt Trotman recorded his first win of the season and improved to 1-2.
The Highlanders will return to action this weekend, Mar. 27-28, when they host Gwynedd Mercy University for their first conference games of the year.
