Home-Opening Baseball Doubleheader Goes To NYU

Langhorne, PA – The Cairn Highlanders dropped both games of their home-opening doubleheader today against New York University 12-7 and 10-2. Matt Trotman and Tristan Ortega started the games from the mound for the Highlanders.

The Violets opened the first game quickly, scoring six runs in the first inning on six hits. Cairn scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first but could not get an edge until it was too late. Both Scott Hilbrandt and Michael Vokulich had two hits, two RBI, and two runs to lead the team.

Down 12-4, Cairn scored one run in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh to cut the deficit, but with only seven innings to play with, the Highlanders couldn't get any closer. Caleb Lang and Tristan Ortega had three hits, one RBI, and two runs to lead the team.

John Burlaga came in to relieve Trotman and pitched 2.2 innings with two earned runs and five strikeouts. Chase Denison got the win for NYU with three earned runs and two strikeouts.

New York University picked up where they left off in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Cairn once again responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately those two runs were all that the Highlanders could manage in the second game.

Jonathon Iaione was able to get through the Highlanders' defense, going 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. The Highlanders had four hits in the game, two from John Burlaga who also had one RBI.

Ben Chapman came into the game on the mound to relieve Ortega and pitched 2.1 innings with one strikeout and no runs scored. Caleb Lang then finished out the game as the pitcher for one inning and struck out two batters; the other grounded out.

With the two losses, Cairn dropped to 2-8 on the season, while NYU improved to 4-6 with the wins. The Highlanders will return to action this Friday when they travel to Neumann University for their first conference game of the season.
