Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Cairn Sweeps At Lancaster Bible Tri-Match

Lancaster, PA - The Cairn men's volleyball team traveled to Lancaster Bible College this afternoon where they swept two matches in a tri-match against the hosts and Bluefield College (Va.).

The first match of the day took place against Bluefield and the Highlanders had no troubles in sets one and two. Cairn won both of those sets 25-16 but the Rams gave the Highlanders a real challenge in set number three.

Josiah Buss led the offense for Cairn against the Rams with 10 kills and was followed closely by Andy Willits with nine kills. Micah Godshall hit with the best percentage in the game at .385; Godshall had seven kills on 13 attempts with two errors.

Cairn held a similar advantage in the third set as they did in sets one and two at 23-17 but the Rams starting coming back. Five straight errors by the Highlanders put Bluefield within one at 23-22 and the Rams tied the game at 25-25. Cairn then capitalized on two final errors by Bluefield and they won the third set 27-25.

Alex Lower finished the match with 33 assists and Matthew Rhodes led the team with eight digs. Cairn hit over .400 in the first set and over .300 in the second set, however the Highlanders hit a -.091 percentage in the third set.

The Highlanders had to then focus their attention on the next game, against Lancaster Bible College. Cairn defeated the Chargers earlier in the season in Langhorne 3-0 and they repeated their efforts with another convincing sweep.

Andy Willits led the attacking for Cairn against the Chargers with 10 kills, while Josiah Buss had eight kills in the match. Willits also led the team on the defense with nine digs. The Highlanders controlled the pace of the match and held the Chargers to a .000 attack percentage.

However, similarly to the first match against Bluefield, Cairn hit for good percentages through sets one and two but went negative in the third set. Michael Emond helped make up for that statistic with seven service aces in the match. The Highlanders had 14 total service aces through both matches this afternoon.

Lower finished the match with 28 assists, compared to just 11 for his counterpart, Paul Fulbright. TJ Forsythe led the Chargers in attacking with five kills total.

With the two wins, Cairn improves their overall record to 7-5 for 2015. The Highlanders' next match will come this Tuesday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Rutgers-Newark to continue their CVC slate.
