Scranton, PA – Cairn men's soccer suffered a 2-0 setback to Marywood University on Wednesday evening and dropped to 3-3 this season in the conference. The Pacers scored one goal in each half and improved to 4-1-1 in the CSAC with the win.
The Pacers came out with a fast start and took 10 shots in the first 20 minutes. However, they did not score their first goal until the 42nd minute of the game. Of those first 10 shots for the pacers, three of them were saved by defender
Kenneth Mercadante (Toms River, NJ). Another four were saved by keeper
Mark Heater (Harrisburg, PA).
The Highlanders took four shots in the first half, with two being saved by Justin Sunseri and one ringing off the post. Heater made three more saves after the first 20 minutes but allowed the Pacers goal at the 41 minute mark by Daniel Hull.
The Highlanders played well in the second half and outshot the Pacers 12-9. Two shots were saved early on in the half, while an
Andrew Gordon (Harleysville, PA) header hit off the crossbar in the 62nd minute.
Marywood scored their second goal of the game in the 73rd minute when Markus Donahoe bodied in the ball off of a Daniel Hull corner kick. Cairn took four more shots before the end of the game with two of them on goal but saved by Sunseri.
Overall, the Pacers led on shots 23-16 and corner kicks 7-2. The Highlanders were led by
Craig Kikendall (Philadelphia, PA) who took six shots with four on goal, Gordon followed with three shots. Heater made 10 saves throughout the game.
Cairn is now 7-7-1 overall with the loss, while Marywood improved to 5-6-3 overall with the win. The Highlanders will next host Cabrini College on Saturday, Oct. 24, after the women play at 1 p.m.
