Griffins Edge Out Highlanders In Women's Soccer

Langhorne, PA – The Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University narrowly defeated The Highlanders, 3-2, in women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. Meghan Wilson (New Hope, PA/New Hope-Solebury) and Alicia Geistdorfer (Perkiomenville, PA/Christopher Dock) each tallied for Cairn and assisted on each other's goals.
 
Cairn started out leading the game with a goal in the 10th minute by Geistdorfer. Wilson took the ball close the end line inside the box and sent a pass to the center of the box for a waiting Geistdorfer. She took one touch to settle the ball and then hit a low shot to the left side of the goal.
 
Gwynedd Mercy answered with a goal in the 16th minute by Jackie Pierson, assisted by Morgan McAndrews. The teams would enter the halftime break level at 1-1 but The Griffins were leading on shots 12-2.
 
The Griffins started the second half by going up 2-1 with a goal by Morgan McAndrews, unassisted. Gwynedd took 12 more shots in the second half for 24 total, while the Highlanders had eight shots total.
 
Wilson then scored her goal in the 57th minute of the game to tie the score at 2-2. Wilson received the ball from Geistdorfer at the top of the box and quickly took a hard shot that got past the keeper on the right side of the net. The goal was Wilson's 13th of the season.
 
Gwynedd Mercy took the lead again in the 76th minute when Jackie Pierson scored her second goal of the game. The goal was assisted by Tori Goebig.
 
The Highlanders had a great chance to tie the game in the 85th minute when Cairn was awarded a penalty kick. Geistdorfer stepped up to take the shot but the keeper guessed to the right side and saved the shot.
 
With the loss, Cairn fell to 4-8 on the season and 2-4 in the conference. Gwynedd Mercy improved to 6-3-2 overall and 4-1 in the CSAC. The Highlanders will next travel to Summit University on Tuesday, Oct. 13, for a 3:30 p.m. game.
