Lancaster, PA - The Highlanders refused to quit against the 6-1 Chargers, but could only come within three and fell 61-58 at the end. Cairn came back from an 11-point deficit with under two minutes to play with great defensive play and got the ball back with 18 seconds on the clock.
That amount of time was plenty for the Highlanders to draw up a play from a sideline inbounds pass, taken by
Reuben Lacy. Lacy and
JD Zamroz played give and go around the arc to try to give either player the best three-point opportunity but ultimately the Chargers didn't give up any room. Lancaster Bible got the ball back and kept it until time expired.
The game appeared to be evenly played despite Lancaster Bible only having one loss on the season thus far. The Chargers shot a greater percentage from the field but Cairn took more shots throughout the contest (56 compared to 46 for Lancaster Bible).
Cairn was also able to control the ball better against Lancaster Bible than they have all season. The Highlanders gave the ball away just eight times, while the Chargers turned it over 21 times. Cairn capitalized by scoring 17 points off of those giveaways. The Chargers gained back the advantage by pulling down 41 rebounds in the game where Cairn collected 19 boards.
Lacy led the Highlanders in scoring with 18 points and was followed by Zamroz with 11. Lacy's season average increased to 14.8 points per game, while Zamroz continued his average of 11.0 per game. Off the bench,
Jordan Sharpe contributed with eight points, three blocks, and three steals.
For head coach
Jason O'Connell, the game marked his return to his alma mater since becoming the leader for Cairn men's basketball.
"We played incredibly hard tonight and each player fought their heart out," said head coach O'Connell after the game. "LBC is a very good team and projected to win the NEAC. We couldn't pull it out but our guys recognize the progress we are making. It was a full team effort."
With the loss, Cairn dropped to 0-9 overall and with the win, Lancaster Bible improved to 7-1 overall. The Highlanders will next host Keystone College on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.
