Watch the game on Highlanders All-AccessLanghorne, PA - Cairn University men's basketball fell to the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday night by the score of 70-53. The game was a far better showing for the Highlanders than their first contest against the Griffins this season where they lost 80-38.
The Highlanders started the game with the first basket, a layup by
Reuben Lacy, and led again at 6-5 with a three-pointer by
Aaron Stovall. However, Cairn would not see the lead for the remainder of the game.
Gwynedd Mercy built a double-digit lead by the 10:47 mark in the first half after an alley-oop to Julian Hyden. The Highlanders cut the lead to seven four minutes later with another layup down low by Lacy. Cairn would eventually go down by 12 at the half but not before they shot 53% from the field and 80% from three-point range.
Overall, Cairn shot 39% field goals and 46% three-point field goals, while Gwynedd Mercy was 55% from the field. The Highlanders bettered the Griffins from the free-throw line though, shooting 86% compared to the 55% of their opponents.
Cairn brought the lead back down to 10 when
Kyle Bonner found his stroke from beyond-the-arc at 13:08 in the second half. The Highlanders couldn't continue to cut the deficit with the pressure put on by the Griffins' defense. Gwynedd Mercy collected eight steals in the game with 15 points off of turnovers.
Hyden collected another alley-oop in the second half that helped build a 19-point lead for the Griffins. Cairn put forth one more rally in the final minutes of the game and pulled to within 13 after
Darnell Clowney and
JD Zamroz hit each of their two free throws.
The Griffins were too much in the end for the Highlanders and won with a 70-53 score at the final buzzer.
Reuben Lacy led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds; he was followed by Clowney with 10 points. Bonner finished with nine points on three baskets from three-point range.
With the loss, the Highlanders dropped to 1-16 overall and 1-10 in the conference. Gwynedd Mercy improved to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the CSAC. Cairn will next play this Saturday at Marywood University for a 3 p.m. start time.
