Highlanders Win Thriller Against Gators In OT

Baltimore, MD - The Highlanders came away victorious after 110 minutes of soccer against the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland to earn their third conference win of the season.

Laurisa Wager ended the stalemate, and the game, with only seconds to spare after Courtney Novak tied the game at 2-2 in the 88th minute. Notre Dame appeared to have the advantage throughout the game--the Gators led the Highlanders on shots, 24-9.

Notre Dame also led in the shots-on-goal category, but Mackenzie Paugh was up to the task for the Highlanders and made 13 saves. Paugh's opposition, Heather Lancellotti, made three saves in the game.

Rachel Clark and Shelby Wischan also registered shots for the Highlanders, but the offense was controlled by Wager and Novak. Cairn was forced to start the game without their second-leading scorer, Alicia Curry, which also meant the Highlanders started with 10 women on the field.

That didn't slow down the Highlanders, and they even went down to nine players before the match ended.

"I am proud of the level of intensity the team played with today," said head coach Laura Behnke after the game. "It was a hard fought game and they battled for 110 minutes. Novak and Wager came up big for us today offensively but overall it was a total team effort."

Novak scored the first goal of the game for the Highlanders in the 40th minute, which was assited by Wager. Novak returned the favor for the game-winner in double-OT.

The win moved Cairn to 4-9-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the conference. The Gators dropped to 2-13 overall with the loss and remain winless in the conference this season. The Highlanders will finish up the 2014 season this Thursday, Oct. 30, when they host Neumann University at 4 p.m.
