Langhorne, PA - Cairn University finished off their 2014 campaign on senior day with a 5-2 loss to Neumann University. Shelby Wischan and Nicole Mantell were the two seniors honored before the game for Cairn. Neumann led on shots 22-9 in the game; all of Cairn's shots came in the second half.
The Highlanders' goals were scored by Alicia Curry and Caitlin Williams within the final 11 minutes of the game. With the loss, Cairn dropped to 4-10-1 and with the win, Neumann improved to 7-8-1 for the season.
The Knights came out of the gate with pressure on the Highlanders and controlled possession for the majority of the first half. Neumann didn't allow Cairn to take any shots during the first half.
Despite the difference in shots as well as the score line, Mantell did well to defend Ashley Hawkins-the Knights leading scorer this year. Mantell kept Hawkins out of the middle of the field and stopped her crosses from entering the box.
The scoring for Neumann was left up to Emily Sanders who came into the game with three goals. Sanders put away three goals to double up her season total. Alexa DeRose took as many shots as Sanders and put one past Mackenzie Paugh.
Overall, it was a faster paced game in the second half and the Highlanders took advantage of some mistakes by the Knights' defense. Curry capitalized by following up her own shot that rebounded off of the keeper.
Curry was again involved in getting the ball towards the opposing goalie for Caitlin Williams' goal late in the game. Williams found the ball at her feet after Curry got tangled up with the Knights' keeper. The goal was Williams' first of the season.
The Highlanders finished their 2014 season with a 3-7-1 record in the CSAC and will look forward to training in the off season to prepare for 2015.
