Langhorne, PA – Cairn men's soccer battled until the final whistle against Immaculata on Tuesday afternoon but ultimately fell 1-0 to the Mighty Macs. For Immaculata, the win was their first within the CSAC in 2014.
Stephen Smith struck the winner for the Mighty Macs in the 60
th minute of the game from about 22 yards out. The ball was played to his feet after the Highlanders miss-played a clearance from their own defensive end. Smith hit the shot with his right foot and the ball quickly made its way to the lower right corner of the goal.
Immaculata only tested Caleb Pancoast one other time in the game, despite their seven shots on goal. The Mighty Macs totaled 11 shots in the game, compared to the Highlanders' 15. Pancoast made six saves overall, while his opponent made five saves in the match.
Leading the stats for Cairn was Ahron Park who hit three shots; two of which went on frame to be saved by Michael Thompson. Park's best chance came in the 19
th minute when he received a ball down the right hand side of the field, ahead of the defense. His shot went across the goalie towards the opposite side but didn't quite have enough power and was saved by Thompson.
Caleb Moore also had chances to put the Highlanders on the board. The first of his chances happened in the 2
nd minute of the game when his shot went off the upper left corner of the goal from the left side, inside the box. Moore found the woodwork later on in the first half when a longer shot from the left side sailed to the opposite corner and skipped off the post.
Later in the game, Ben Cardillo took his turn at finding the back of the net when his header was hit with power but went over the crossbar.
With the loss, the Highlanders dropped their overall record to 2-11-1 overall and their CSAC record to 1-6. Immaculata improved to 3-11-1 overall and 1-6 in the conference. Cairn will play their next game at Cabrini College in one week's time at 4 p.m.
