La Plume, PA - Cairn University's men's basketball team had their second largest offensive output of the season against Colonial States Athletic Conference rivals, Keystone College, on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, their defense wasn't as effective.
Box Score
Keystone had jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before
Charles Hopkins and the Highlandes fought their way back to being down just 10-8, refusing to let this game get away from them early. The Giants, however, went on a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to break open a 15-point advantage, leading 26-11.The two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the half, with Keystone maintaining a 13 point lead at halftime, 47-34.
The two teams battled away in the early going of the second half, with neither Keystone able to build on their lead nor Cairn able to get any closer to the Giants. That is until the 11:31 mark of the 2nd half. With the score at 62-51 and Cairn threatening to pull within single-digits, the Giants went on a 8-0 run, extending their lead from 11 points to 19 points in just under a minutes time. That run, although small in comparison, seemed to break any hopes of a Cairn comeback.
The Giants eventually wore the Highlanders down and began building their margin into the 20's and even into the 30's late in the game. Eventually, Keystone would claim a 101-73 victory.
Five different Keystone players reached double-figures, led by Duncan Lunsford who came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points. Greg Westry also reached the 20-point mark, finishing with 21 points. Mike Kelly (15), Miles Dargan (13), and Dan Candemeres (11) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Keystone.
For the Highlanders,
Charles Hopkins led the way with 18 points, including 4 3-pointers. The Lacy brothers combined for a total of 29 points and 22 rebounds between the pair.
Barron Lacy grabbed a career-high 16 points on a 6-for-10 shooting night, while
Reuben Lacy came down with 13 rebounds to match his 13 points.
Keystone led in two key areas of play; bench points and points off of turnovers. Thanks to Lunsford's production, the Giants bench outscored the Highlanders 39-15, proving a deep bench can go a long way. Keystone also held the advantage with 36 points off of 24 Cairn turnovers, compared to 12 points the Highlanders made out of 15 Keystone turnovers. The Highlanders did hold an advantage in 2nd chance points, 18-5, thanks to their slight advantage on the boards with 41 rebounds to Keystone's 35.
Cairn slips to 1-10 overall, 0-6 in conference. The men will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy this Saturday for a 4pm tip-off.
