Clarks Summit, PA - The Crimson Eagles Men's Basketball team were hoping to rebound following their loss to Penn St.-Brandywine in a game they felt they could've won. They got their chance against a struggling Baptist Bible that entered the game 0-12.
When it comes to playing in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and more so when taking on a longtime rival, you can never take any game for granted. Regardless of records, when these two teams play, it's anybody's game. Baptist Bible proved that.
Despite what the records or standings showed, Baptist Bible looked like a team running on all cylinders and it's hard to believe they're a winless team. BBC's Dan Dodd and Joseph Petersen seemed to make every shot the threw up. ending with 20 and 23 points respectively. PBU on the other hand couldn't find their shooter's touch, shooting only 34% for the game.
The Crimson Eagles did have three players finish in double digits with
Adam Derus (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township), Claude Chalk (Philadelphia, PA / Philadelphia Regional), and
Seth Heinicke (Ivyland, PA / Calvary Christian) all trying to do their part. Derus led the Crimson Eagles with 12 points, despite struggling from long-range. Chalk and Heinicke had 11 and 10 points towards PBU's cause.
It took PBU over four minutes to get their first points, with Claude Chalk finally putting them on the scoreboard with a layup at the 15:46 mark. Up until that point, the Defenders had jumped out to a 9-0 lead.
With everything going in for BBC and PBU shooting a dismal 30% in the first half, the Defenders were able to slowly build a strong lead going into the half, leading by as many as 17 on two occasions before the Crimson Eagles used determination to dwindle the lead to 9 going into the break.
Baptist led 34-25 at halftime.
To start the second half, PBU's
Charles Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA / Roxborough) cut the lead to seven 20 seconds into the half. Two minutes later, the Crimson Eagles were looking up at a 17 point deficit for the 3rd time in the game.
The Crimson Eagles improved their shooting only slightly from the first half, shooting 39% in the second. It was no match for Baptist Bible's 60% shooting from the field though. BBC would eventually extend their lead to 25 points late on.
Baptist Bible would go on to win by 16, 76-60.
Coach Penley will be sure to put this one down to poor shooting and just running into a team that had everything go its way. "One of those nights", as the expression goes.
PBU returns home this Monday, January 9th to take on Keystone College.
