CHESTER, PA - PBU's Men's Soccer team travelled to Widener University in an attempt to finally break the slump against the Pride but came up on the short end of a 2-0 scoreline.
The early stages were a somewhat back-and-forth affair, with the only difference being Widener being able to create some shots and PBU's moves breaking down at the last step. As the first-half wore on, The Pride slowly started taking control of the match and applying more and more pressure to the PBU backline. Reminiscent of last year's team, PBU's defense took on a bend-but-not-break approach.
Eventually though Widener found the back of the net on 32 minutes when junior DJ DiPaola took advantage of some passive play on PBU's backline to dribble into the penalty box and slot the ball home to open the scoring.
In the second half, PBU started more brightly. Applying the pressure and starting to take hold of the midfield battle, the Crimson Eagles were able to create many more chances. Despite being outshot 24-7 throughout the contest, PBU passed up multiple shooting opportunities. However, of the 7 recorded shots many were clear scoring chances. Shots for the second half were more even with Widener registering 9 to PBU's 6.
"I've always told my guys that I don't care how many shots we take, I care about how many scoring opportunities we get. Shots are good, but scoring chances are better," said 2nd year coach Scott Fogarty. "Despite the outcome, I was happy with how we played. Last year's result against Widener looked better on paper, but we played much better this time around."
On several occasions, PBU's men came up half a step late on some wonderful passes that nearly sent players clear in on goal.
PBU's Men will travel to Middletown, Pa on Saturday, September 10 to take on Penn St.-Harrisburg.
