CLARKS SUMMIT, PA - Having led several games down the stretch only to come out on the losing end this year, the men's basketball team found themselves in a familiar tale Saturday afternoon. After trailing for nearly the entirety of the contest, Baptist Bible College mounted a late game comeback to overcome PBU, 76-73, Saturday afternoon.
Deadlocked at 20-apiece midway through the opening period, PBU created some space thanks to 19 first half points from sophomore Adam Derus. The 6'1 guard knocked down eight of nine looks throughout the first frame to help give the visitors a 39-36 cushion at the break.
The Crimson Eagles carried their momentum into the back end of play, beginning the second session on a 12-4 boost. PBU managed to keep their lead between six to 10 points over the next 12 minutes of the period but Baptist showed resiliency by closing the gap down the stretch.
A Stephen Howard floater off the glass tied the game with just over three minutes to go with momentum fading back and forth down the stretch. Several big buckets from BBC, however, helped give the host group a three point lead with 11 seconds remaining. The Crimson Eagles managed a contested three point look at the bucket but couldn't convert, giving Baptist the win and the season sweep over PBU.
The visitors equaled a season low with just 13 turnovers on the night but hit just 37.9 of their field goal attempts for the game. Baptist overcame 22 cough-ups by knocking down 48.3 percent of their looks as the host group received eight or more points from six different players.
The Defenders used their size to gain a 42-22 edge in points around the cylinder and had 45 of their 73 points come from the bench.
The Crimson Eagles were paced by Derus' career high of 28 points on nine of 13 shooting from the floor while Jeff Bishop and Claude Chalk both chipped in with 12 apiece.
The basketball team will get back into action on Tuesday during a home date with Neumann University at 8:00 pm.
