LANGHORNE, PA - After leading the entire way, the Crimson Eagles saw the score flip-flop when it mattered most.
The men's basketball dropped a 70-66 decision to visiting St. Joe's Brooklyn Tuesday evening during their season opener as the host group helplessly watched the Bears manufacture a thrilling come-from-behind victory.
The Crimson Eagles, who led by as many as 10 midway through the second frame, were shackled with turnovers on four straight possessions in the waning minutes as Brooklyn overcame a 31-28 halftime deficit to pull out the gut-check type triumph. PBU ended the game with 22 giveaways, a costly stat that ultimately led to a 27-11 edge in points off cough-ups in favor of the visitors.
Despite a relatively efficient shooting clip throughout the second stanza (48.1 percent), the Crimson Eagles were thumped on the boards during the final 20 minutes as the Bears corralled 13 second-half bounces off the offensive glass, a number that lead to 20 second chance points for Brooklyn for the game.
Playing in his first collegiate game, rookie forward Jeff Bishop was a force on both ends of the floor, pumping in 26 points on 11 of 13 shooting while hoisting eight rebounds. Senior point guard Brett Zamroz put up 12 points in 35 minutes of work while freshman backcourt mate Chase Brunner chipped in with 10.
The Crimson Eagles will look to bounce back during their second game of the year this Friday when the group heads to St. David's, PA to compete in the Nate Ware Invitational. PBU will go up against host Eastern University on Friday at 8:00 pm during the opening round of the two-day tournament.
