Rutgers-Camden Slips by PBU in Home Opener

Box Score

LANGHORNE, PA – After getting drubbed 7-0 a year ago against Rutgers-Camden University in what turned out to equate PBU’s worst loss of the season, it was hard to know what to expect heading into Thursday’s contest with the Scarlet Knights.

Complicating matters was the fact that Rutgers-Camden touts 14 upperclassmen, three sophomores, and no freshman – making the group an extremely veteran team, to say the least.

But if expectations heading into the contest were for the Crimson Eagles to fold – they did anything but.

Instead, PBU forced the Scarlet Raptors into a grind-it out battle and made the visitors work to come away with a 2-0 victory. It ended up as an encouraging home opener that saw the Crimson Eagle defense lock up when called upon, stalling Rutgers’ offensive front for the majority of play.

Unable to find the net through the early going, the visitors finally struck midway through the first half on a blast by sophomore forward Samantha Sharp from the top of the box that found the back of the net. The Crimson Eagle defense would stifle Rutgers for the next twenty three minutes before Sharp collected her second score of the day, this time climbing out of a clump of players to beat keeper Kristen Lyszczasz.

Despite rough and physical play from the Scarlet Raptors throughout the afternoon with a foul count that ended 15-2, the Crimson Eagles wouldn't allow a single score during the back end of play. For the game, PBU was on the losing end of a 24-8 discrepancy in total shots and was blanked 10-0 in corners.

Rutgers-Camden generated their first victory of the season with the triumph moving to 1-0 while PBU slips to 0-2.

The Crimson Eagles will have another crack at the group’s first victory of the year when PBU hosts Valley Forge Christian College this Saturday at 1:00 pm.
