LANGHORNE, PA - To slip to 0-2 to open up the conference season would have been discouraging - if not devastating - for the men's soccer team Thursday afternoon.
Thanks to a two goal, one assist effort manufactured by sophomore Justin Hays, that's not an issue.
The Crimson mustered a 3-2 triumph over visiting Centenary College Thursday in a match that could very well prove to have serious playoff implications down the road, because - in a system where you have just nine CSAC games to prove you belong - every conference game is vital.
On Thursday, the visiting Cyclones needed just 8:27 to get on board when Centenary senior Sean Chirico tucked home a penalty kick following an errant foul in the box from PBU.
Justin Hays would respond midway through the stanza off a Jeremy McAlack feed to even things at 1-apiece. Hays would follow-up just four minutes later, this time off a dish from vet Phil Haas to give PBU the go-ahead score.
Coming out of the gates in the second period, Centenary would notch their second goal of the afternoon just 1:52 in. But the Hays to Haas combo would prove deadly once again, this time at the 50 minute mark as a Hays pass to Haas would lead to what ended up as the game winning goal.
PBU keeper Andy Ecker had another big day in the net for PBU coming up with 10 stops to mark the fourth time this season he's posted double-digit saves. Centenary ended the game with a slight edge in both shots (21-17) and corners (4-1).
The soccer team currently stands at 5-5-1 overall (1-1 CSAC) while the Cyclones fall to 3-6 (0-1 CSAC).
PBU will get back into action this Saturday during homecoming weekend when the group hosts longtime rival Baptist Bible College at 2:00 pm.
