PBU falls to LBC by four in last home game of season

Baketball team can't upend local rival

LANGHORNE, PA - Usually when your team holds a plus-11 advantage on the offensive glass and limits the opposition to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, you'll win.

But when the opponent is determined to take your go-to big man out of the game, it forces other players on your squad to "step up" and increase their offensive production - or else, there's no way around it, your chances to come out victorious are minimal.

The Crimson Eagles - whose NCCAA All-American forward Tom Arthur faced double, triple, and on rare occasions what even seemed to be quadruple teams Friday evening - struggled to get things rolling offensively as Lancaster Bible virtually took PBU's 6'5 forward out of the game in the Charger's 63-59 victory.

Although Arthur still managed to contribute by snagging a game high 13 rebounds (six on the offensive glass), LBC allowed the native of Lacey Township High School to get off just four shots and limited Arthur to eight points for the game - 12.4 below his average. And despite several Crimson Eagle players managing to increase their offensive production in response to LBC's defensive game plan - including 20 points from PBU's bench - the Crimson Eagles were ultimately unable to overcome a woeful performance from the three point line that saw the team connect on just two of 20 attempts from long range.

The Chargers jumped out to an early 11-5 lead 15:09 into the contest but would see their advantage slowly evaporate over the next several minutes as PBU would tie the game at 15-all with 7:28 left in the opening period. The visitors would respond with a run of their own, building up a 13 point advantage at 34-21 with 2:14 remaining. Willie Miller would help the Crimson Eagles counter by connecting on consecutive buckets as PBU would enter the half trailing by 10, 37-27.

Showing a greater defensive intensity to begin the second 20 minutes of play, PBU limited Lancaster Bible to three total points in the first 11:02 of the second stanza and took their first lead of the game (43-40) since early in the first period. Eric Nuff's triple seconds later would tie the game at 43-all as things would see-saw back and forth for the ensuing five minutes.

With the score once again notched at 52-apeice, the Chargers went on a 7-2 rally to go up five with 1:29 remaining. With PBU forced to foul, LBC shot a mediocre six for 10 from the free throw line in the final seconds but would see the Crimson Eagles misfire on five consecutive jumpers down the stretch to help seal LBC's fourth victory of the year.

Sophomore Willie Miller continued his recent offensive explosion in the loss by netting 19 points and dishing out a game high seven assists. Several players contributed well above their season scoring average as Austin McCardle chipped in eight points and six boards; Michael Phillips seven points and five rebounds; Jon Delgado seven points; and Dan Esbenshade six. Otis Caston was also a key contributor as the senior forward grabbed seven rebounds, all on the offensive glass.

With Friday's game concluding their regular season schedule, PBU will begin NCCAA II Regional play beginning next week. The Crimson Eagles will travel to Davis College on Wednesday to take on the Falcons at 6:00 pm in first round action.
