Bel Air, MD - Highlanders fall short against Notre Dame (MD).
Game 1:
Cairn (1-30 / 0-11 UNITED EAST) got the scoring started in the top of the second inning when Freshman Shortstop
Matthew Urena (Hialeah, FL / Everglades HS) sent his first career home run over the fence in left center to put the Highlanders up 1-0. Cairn threatened to pad the lead in the top of the 3rd by loading the bases but failed to push any runs across the plate. Notre Dame (MD) (12-22 / 7-6 UNITED EAST) responded with a strong 3rd inning and built a 6-1 advantage. Both teams went scoreless until the 5th inning when the Gators tacked on another 5 runs to go up 11-1. In the top of the 6th inning Cairn returned to the scoring column after a walk by Urena and a single by freshman DH
Trevor Golden (Allentown, PA / William Allen High School) set up the Highlanders to score 1 run on a balk by the Gators pitcher and add another after Sophomore center fielder
Stephen Persiani (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA / Capistrano Valley Christian) singled to right field. Freshman pitcher
Pat Shave (Brick Township, NJ / Brick Township) came out of the bullpen for Cairn to start the 6th inning and delivered 3 shutout innings but the Highlanders bats went quiet and Cairn dropped game 1 11-3.
Game 2:
Cairn jumped out in front early after the first 4 Highlander batters reached base safely including a lead-off single by Junior second baseman
AJ Ramirez (Manchester, New Jersey / Elmira College). Ramirez then swiftly stole second base to give the Highlanders a runner in scoring position. Freshman third baseman
Jake Murnock (Scranton, PA / Scranton Preparatory School) and Sophomore Left-fielder Cam Burnes (Syracuse, NY / Faith Heritage) each singled up the middle with the latter scoring Ramirez from 3rd. After a caught stealing removed Murnock from the base paths Urena singled scoring Burnes from second. The Gators rallied in the bottom of the first to take the lead 3-2. In the top of the second Persiani reach base on a single but the Highlanders failed to bring him around to score. Notre Dame (MD) tacked on another run in the bottom half to go up 4-2. The Gators continued piling on and scored 5 runs between the 4th and 5th innings to go up 9-2 over the Highlanders. In the top of the 7th freshman outfielder
Ethan Perez (Hasbrouck Heights / Hasbrouck Heights Highschool) homered to left field to cut into the deficit. Notre Dame (MD) stretched the lead to 11-3 entering the 9th inning. Ramirez hit a 2 RBI double for the Highlanders Murnock followed this up with an RBI double but the momentum was stopped there and Cairn fell 11-6.
Cairn returns to action Monday April 20th traveling to Arcadia for a Non-conference game.
