LAX: Highlanders Triumph Over Redhawks to Extend Streak

Pittsburgh, PA- The Highlanders took a day trip to La Roche to face off against the Redhawks, coming away with a solid 14-4 win.

The game got underway as Cairn (2-5, 0-1 United East) got the first possession of the match thanks to a face off win from senior midfielder/FO Adain Holliday. Cairn managed to get a shot off but were unable to score. La Roche's (0-6) first possession didn't last long as sophomore LSM Luke Ruiz (Matawan, NJ / Timothy Christian) had a quick takeaway that led to the opening goal by senior attackman Cole Heffler (Eldersburg, MD / Central Maryland Christian) to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. The Highlanders took this momentum to quickly extend their lead as Heffler got his second of the day and then assisted freshman attackman Ethan Smelcer (Perry Hall, MD / Concordia preparatory school) in making it 3-0. Cairn didn't look to let up there as Holliday capitalized off a pass from freshman attackman Brenden Adler (Dallas, TX / Homeschool). The Redhawks shifted gears, pushing for a lifeline; they managed to get one back to make the score 4-1. Their hopes quickly vanished though, as Heffler got two more off passes from Holliday and Adler to wrap up the quarter, 6-1.

Smelcer did not need long to get rolling in the second as he scored 20 seconds into the quarter, an assist credited to Heffler. La Roche managed to get it back just 3 minutes later to make the score 7-2. Both teams showed a defensive strong hold for the remaining 12 minutes left in the quarter as neither team was able to find the net. The Highlanders lead the Redhawks at half, 7-2.

La Roche came out of halftime with a mission ,accomplishing it just 26 seconds into the third quarter, closing Cairn's lead to just 4 goals. Cairn showed a strong possession game to maintain a majority of the possession for the next 7 minutes, leading to the completion of Smelcer's hartrick, making the score 8-3. He didn't stop there, finding his fourth and fifth goals of the night just before the end of the quarter, extending Cairn's lead to 7.

The fourth quarter took a minute to get underway, as both teams' defense controlled the tempo, taking 7 minutes to see the first goal from the quarter from Holliday, finding his seconds just minutes later to make their lead 12-3. The Redhawks picked up their tempo, finding one to close the lead to 8, but sophomore midfielder Joshua Wong got it right back in  less than a minute. Heffler closed out the match, getting his 5th goal on the night, the game ending with a score of 14-4.

Heffler had an outstanding performance, putting up 5 goals and 3 assists. Holliday following behind with another 6 points and Smelcer contributed to the scoresheet with 5 goals. Wong meets a milestone with his first career goal.

The Highlanders head back home to Langhorne, PA to host DelVal University next Saturday the 4th at 11am.
