DOYLESTOWN, PA -- The Highlanders went on the road Wednesday night to face off against Delaware Valley, securing their fourth-straight victory, once again in sweep fashion.
In set 1, Delaware Valley (3-7) started off strong with a 7-3 lead but Cairn (7-2) pursued quickly with two block assists from freshman opposite Bella Manthe (Manila, Philippines / Faith Academy) and junior middle Georgianna Thorpe (Southampton, PA / William Tennent) tying it 7-7. Junior setter Anna Dow (Syracuse, NY Faith Heritage School), Thorpe, and freshman outside hitter Marah Lehman (Chambersburg, PA / Chambersburg) got to rallying Cairn to a 23-15 lead. Cairn won the set with an ace by junior outside hitter Bridget Dahn (Smithsburg, MD Heritage Academy) after another block by Thorpe.Â
Set 2 started off with the Highlanders in control this time. Sophomore middle Maddie Shackelford (Warington, PA / Plumstead Christian) went storming with 3 aces to give the Cairn a 11-5 lead on a 7-1 run. The Aggies were unable to gain an advantage as the Highlanders climbed higher to a 19-9 lead with two more kills by Thorpe. DelVal finally found their footing, going on a 7-point run to cut the score to 19-17 but Thorpe and Manthe wouldn't let it go on any further, each scoring a kill and then teaming up for two blocks, ending the set 25-19 for Cairn. Â
In the third fame, Cairn kept the momentum with four early kills by Lehman, taking an 11-4 lead, not letting up as they found themselves ahead big, 18-8 as Manthe scored back-to-back aces. The Aggies attempted to fight back cutting the lead within 5 (20-15) but lost their footing with Lehman and Dow continuing to attack. Mantha called game with the final kill on an out of system assist by Lehman to get the job done.
Lehman led the way with kills, having 10 throughout the night. Thorpe and Manthe combined for 11 of Cairn's 13 blocks, Thorpe with 6 (1 solo, 5 assist) and Manthe with five. Dow had 18 assists while sophomore libero Liliana Magazzu (Reading, PA / Exeter) contributed a team-high 15 digs.
