LANGHORNE, PA – Baseball took on the Greyhounds of Moravian University on Wednesday for their regular season finale, picking up their second mercy rule win of the week, 15-5.
A high scoring first inning got started with two runs for the Greyhounds on three walks and a hit. Senior right fielder
Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) got things started in the home half with an infield single, stealing second and advancing ninety feet on a wild pitch as he came around to score on a single from classmate
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy). Sophomore designated hitter
Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) singled as senior left fielder
Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area) legged out a triple, scoring two. A wild pitch would score him as Jackson came up again and delivered a 2-run double to put Cairn (25-14) up 8-2.
Moravian (11-26) would add two more in the second, leading off with a hit by pitch and walk which both scored on a double. Another Highlander run came in the third with sophomore shortstop
Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) singled with two outs, coming around to score as Jackson reached on an error.
Cairn added another in the fourth before a five-spot in the fifth with three-straight singles and another extra base hit for Harris to get ahead 15-4. Moravian would try to prevent the mercy rule in the seventh, working the bases loaded with no outs but a shutdown appearance by junior reliever
Gavin Switzer (Millersville, PA / Penn Manor) with two strikeouts would end the regular season with a 15-5 win for the Highlanders.
Senior centerfielder
Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) went 4-5 in the game including a double and a bunt single. Jackson, Warr, Holt, Harris, and Schurga was had a pair of hits, Harris with a double and triple for three RBI. Freshman righty
Josh Thiero (Piscataway, NJ / Timothy Christian) recorded his first career win with 2.2 scoreless innings in relief and three strikeouts.
Cairn will head to #4 Penn College on Friday for two games beginning at 11 a.m in the second round of the United East Championship.
