LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Softball had their home opener against Penn St. Brandywine on Thursday, dropping both games in the afternoon, 11-2 and 12-4.
GAME ONE
Cairn (2-13 / 0-4 UNITED EAST) had a tough time in game one, giving up five runs in the first inning with a deficit to overcome. After two scoreless innings between both of the teams, Penn St. Brandywine (15-5 / 4-0 UNITED EAST) scored another six runs in the fourth, upping their lead to 11 going to the fifth inning.
Freshman utility
Riley Curtis (Newark, DE / Odessa) hit an RBI double to right field late in the bottom of the fifth to give the Highlanders two runs and a chance to get on the board, but would lose in 5 innings, 11-2.
Curtis was 1-3 with 2 RBIs in game one of the doubleheader against the Nittany Lions.
GAME TWO
Brandywine scored a quick two runs in the third, but the Highlanders would level the playing field, responding with junior utility
Abby McIntyre (Galloway, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) hitting a single down the right field line, bringing in one run making the score 2-1. Cairn would go on to score another run in the fourth, with senior outfielder
Julianna Baker (Freeland, PA / Clarks Summit University) reaching on a fielder's choice, adding an RBI on the day to tie the game at two a piece.
Brandywine would then score 4 runs in the fifth inning, making the score 6-2. Senior infielder
Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delaware County Christian) got more scoring going for the Highlanders with a single through the left side, bringing in another run, making it 6-3. The Highlanders weren't done just yet as freshman first baseman
Korina Feliciano (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill West) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth bringing to cut the lead to 6-4. The Nittany Lions wouldn't look back and would go on to score 6 more runs throughout the rest of the game to win 12-4.
Senior infielder
Julia Bruestle (Abington, PA / Abington) and Heacock would each go 2-4 on in the game two loss.
The Highlanders look for their first conference win at home Saturday against the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland for an afternoon doubleheader at 1 pm and 3 pm.
