SB: Softball Takes Two of Three on Opening Day

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Cairn's Softball team voyaged to Myrtle Beach over the weekend and had their first round of games on Sunday, going 2-1 on the day.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders won their season opener 4-3 over Penn St. DuBois.

Statistics currently unavailable.

GAME TWO
For their second game of the day, the Highlanders faced Penn State Schuylkill. First to score was junior catcher Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty University Online Academy) with an inside-the-park home run, putting 2 on the board which also brought in senior infielder Julia Bruestle (Abington, PA / Abington). Penn St. Schuylkill scored in the bottom half, making the game 2-1.

Nine runs between the second, third, and fourth for the Nittany Lions would give them a commanding 10-2 lead as junior utility Sydney Wright (Souderton, PA / Souderton Area) and senior infielder Molly Deshetsky (Olmstedville, NY / Clarks Summit University) strung together a pair of hits to score another run as Cairn (2-1 / UNITED EAST) fell 10-3.

Petroro, freshman utility Riley Curtis (Newark, DE / Odessa), Wright, and Deshetsky each had a hit in the game.

GAME THREE
For the third and final game of the day, the Highlanders held a high scoring game against Penn St. Hazleton. In the first inning, Petroro, junior utility Abby McIntyre (Galloway, NJ / Pilgrim Academy), and senior infielder Abby Heacock (Media, PA / Delaware County Christian) all came around to score, putting 3 runs on the board as Bruestle and senior outfielder Julianna Baker (Freeland, PA Clarks Summit University) recorded hits. The Nittany Lions would score five in the bottom half to take a 5-3 lead.

Similarly to the first, the scoring continued in the third inning . Wright singled to center field, bringing two in for Cairn (Bruestle and Baker). With the score now tied 5-5, freshman utility Korina Feliciano (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hil West) scored on Deshetsky's hit followed by a pair or errors and walks to score Deshetsky and Petroro, now up 8-5.

While Cairn kept Penn St. Hazelton quiet in the third, the Nittany Lions cut the lead to one, 8-7 in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth as the Highlanders did not score until the top of the 6th. Wright put the ball in play with the bases loaded, sending Baker home, and loaded the bases again as Feliciano was hit by a pitch. Heacock and McIntyre each recorded another hit as the lead got up to 17-8. Penn St. Hazelton put up two runs in the bottom of the sixth, now 17-10.
