LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Men's Volleyball hosted Immaculata on Wednesday night after a week hiatus, picking up right where they left off with a 3-0 sweep of the Mighty Macs.
The first set went back and forth out of the gate until graduate outside hitter
Noah Ruiz Esparza (Levittown, PA / Berean Academy) put down a kill to begin hold a streak of four points for Cairn (2-6 / 1-1 UNITED EAST) as junior middle
Caleb Cabrera (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) and sophomore outside hitter
Jesse Stuart (Chattanooga, TN / Chiang Rai International Christian School) sent back an attack, teaming up for a block assist to put the Highlanders up 15-10. As Immaculata (5-7 / INDEPENDENT) tried to tie it back up, sophomore outside hitter
Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea International Christian School Uijeongbu) and junior middle
David Larbi (Bensalem, PA / Bensalem) sent over kills to stay ahead. As Larbi secured another kill, Poirier and Stuart followed to push the lead back to five, up 20-15. Poirier, Cabrera, and Ruiz Esparza each added another with the Mighty Macs handing over the set on a service error, 25-21.
Set two had Cairn in the lead again from junior setter
Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) starting things off with an ace. Immaculata went on to take the lead 10-8 with Stuart and Labi firing off kills to help right the ship. Adler and Larbi would then team up on a block to take the lead back as Poirier added a kill and then blocked an attack with Cabrera. With the anticipation building, Cairn went on a run of five points with a kill each from Poirier and Ruiz Esparza, placing the Highlanders securely in the lead 21-16. Despite a run from the Mighty Macs, mistakes on the Immaculata side of the court would cost them the second set and give Cairn a 2-0 match lead, 25-23.
Poirier and Ruiz Esparza began the third frame with a kill apiece along with Larbi and Stuart to get ahead 6-3 after an ace by Ruiz Esparza. Poirier sent off two more kills to get Cairn ahead 10-6. The Highlanders kept attacking the net hard, keeping them in a safe lead until late. Immaculata rattled off three points to cut the deficit to 23-22 before Larbi sent home a kill and Ruiz Esparza won the match on an ace.
Poirier continued his hot attacking with 18 kills on .351% hitting. Ruiz Esparza had seven kills with a pair of aces of 9.5 points. Larbi and Stuart each managed five kills, Larbi with two block assists and Stuart with three. Cabrera continued his effective defense of the net with a game-high four block assists. Adler finished with 33 assists in three sets along with a game-high 13 digs.
The Highlanders will head down to Gallaudet on Saturday to face Gallaudet (12 p.m.) in a conference match and then wrapping up the tri-match with Penn St. Schuylkill (2 p.m.) before spring break.
