LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Baseball bounced back on Thursday with a 5-4 win over Penn St. Brandywine in non-conference action.
The Nittany Lions were the first to strike, scoring on three hits in the top of the first, adding two more in the third as the Highlander defense allowed a pair of errors. Cairn (9-5 / UNITED EAST) cut the lead to one as junior outfielder
James Wtulich (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) led off the bottom of the fourth beating out an infield single. Sophomore catcher
Jay Sariano (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) moved him over on a bunt and eventually to third. Senior centerfielder
Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) walked, stealing second as sophomore second baseman
Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) scored two with a single through the right side.
Penn St. Brandywine (2-12/ UNITED EAST) added another in the sixth on two hits and another error, pushing the lead back to 4-2. Senior right fielder
Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom half, scoring as classmate
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) homered, his sixth of the season. Holt picked up right where Warr left off with a single followed by junior third baseman
Ben Gagnon (Bethlehem, PA / Northampton CC) reaching base with a walk. Sophomore shortstop
Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) doubled down the right field line, scoring both Holt and Gagnon to give Cairn the lead.
Junior righthander
Greg Jessup (Tyler, TX / McKinney Christian) entered in relief for the sixth inning, throwing 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball while striking out seven and allowing only a single hit for his first win of the season. Holt went 3-5 with a pair of RBI. Warr was 2-4 with a home run for 2 RBI as well. Schurga had the go-ahead RBI with a double.
The Highlanders will break until next week where they host Penn St. Schuylkill (Tuesday), Delaware Valley (Wednesday), and #21 Gettysburg (Thursday).
