READING, PA – Cairn Women's Basketball took on the Nittany Lions of Penn St. Berks in Reading for a non-conference bout, falling 66-54.
Senior guard
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire) got the Highlanders rolling with a layup and three-pointer before Berks (1-6 / UNITED EAST) responded with the lead, holding on to a 14-13 advantage after the first quarter.
The Nittany Lions came out in force in the second, extending to a seven-point lead to open the second frame. Sophomore forward
Lexi Cramer (Greenwood, DE / Greenwood Mennonite) and junior forward
Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) knocked down threes to cut the lead to single-possession, but Berks quickly climbed back in the drivers' seat with a 32-28 lead at the half.
As the Highlanders cut down the lead, Sobrino took the lead with a fastbreak layup as Cairn (1-5 / UNITED EAST) continued to battle. Freshman guard
Lily Welsh (Mt. Laurel, NJ / King's Christian) hit a three to keep the Highlanders in control, but Berks scored eight unanswered points to end the period.
Berks ran ahead to a 13-point lead to open the final quarter, finishing out the frame with a 66-54 win.
Brittin recorded her third-straight double-double of fourteen points and fifteen rebounds along with two blocks. Sobrino led all Highlanders scorers with sixteen points.
Cairn will be back in action for their conference opener, hosting Keystone College on Wednesday, December 3 at 7 p.m.
