LANGHORNE, PA—The Highlanders faced off against the Owls of Bryn Mawr on Thursday. The Owls took the 65-56 win over the Highlanders.
The game started off as a defensive battle as neither team could sink a basket for the first two minutes of the game. Bryn Mawr (4-2, Centennial) secured the first points with a mid-range jumper in the third minute of the game. Their lead didn't last long as junior forward
Laryssa Robinson (Mount Laurel, NJ / Life Center) tipped in a bucket in Cairn's (1-4, United East) next possession. The Owls looked to storm away, but graduate guard
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire) stuck with it scoring Cairn's next 5 points to keep the score tight. Junior forward
Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) followed up on the effort to help Cairn take the lead with a tip as the score became 12-8 in the final minutes of the first. Bryn Mawr got the final point of the quarter with a free throw, and the quarter ended with Cairn having a 12-9 lead.
The second quarter started with the Owls looking to steal the momentum with the first 5 points of the quarter until senior guard
Tatiana Ipri (Mullica Hill, NJ / Gloucester County Christian) canceled that momentum by sinking a three-point shot to give Cairn the lead again. Sobrino looked to add to Cairn's lead by making back-to-back free throws and then sinking a three as Cairn took a 20-17 lead. The Highlanders ended the quarter strong with a layup by Bright and then a strong defensive effort to keep the Owls scoreless in the final minutes. Cairn headed into the break with a 23-17 lead.
Cairn came out of the break with heat as they got quick back-to-back layups thanks to a steal by Sobrino. The Highlanders extended their lead to twelve after freshman guard
Lily Welsh (Mount Laurel, NJ / King's Christian) got a layup and Bright followed with a two-point jumper. The Owls went on a run to bring Cairn's lead down to five points before both teams would exchange back-to-back buckets until the Owls took the lead after a three-pointer. Bryn Mawr finished out the quarter strong with a 43-40 lead.
Cairn started off the fourth with going 3-4 from the line to tie the game before the Owls made back-to-back baskets to create some space. Junior forward
Emily Brittin was able to close the gap with 3 points from the free throw line, but Bryn Mawr fought back and made the gap six points after a three-pointer and a layup. As the game looked to come to a close, the Owls had stormed off to establish a 9-point lead that despite Cairn's efforts to come back, the Owls offense matched every bucket and point. The game ended with a 65-56 win for the Bryn Mawr Owls.
Sobrino took the most points of the matchup with 23 and 3 steals, while Bright walked away with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 steals. Brittin showed up with 10 points while getting 13 rebounds.
The Highlanders will head on the road on Monday to face off against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks at 3pm in Reading, PA.
