LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn University women's basketball team hosted Notre Dame of Maryland University at the Mason Activity Center in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The Highlanders were defeated with a final score of 73-57.
Senior guard
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire) opened with five quick points as the Highlander offense went cold, allowing Notre Dame (9-11 / 7-4 UNITED EAST) to get ahead by five. Sophomore forward
Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) splashed two mid-range shots late in the quarter to keep Cairn (1-15 / 0-10 UNITED EAST) in the game.
The Gators pushed the lead to eight as Sobrino responded with another jump shot and three pointer. Cairn kept on the hunt with Notre Dame extending the lead to double digits. Sobrino made the most of her open look on the Highlanders' last possession of the half, making a deep three, cutting the lead to ten.
Sophomore forward
Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) had the hot hand out of the break, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to open the frame and begin making the deficit more manageable. Classmate
Laryssa Robinson (Mount Laurel, NJ / Life Center) and Sobrino added deep shots right after, making it a one-possession game. The Gators answered with a 9-4 run to close the frame with Cairn down 54-47 with ten minutes to play.
Sobrino took away a Gator possession and went the length of the court for a layup to disrupt the momentum as sophomore forward
Audrey Elisondo (Bethesda, MD / James I O'Neill High School) ad Brittin each crashed the boards and scored a putback layup. The Highlanders were outscored 19-10 in the frame as Notre Dame came out the victors, 73-57.
Sobrino had 21 points with four three-pointers and a trio of steals. Bright and Brittin each went for a double-double of 13/11 and 11/14, respectively.
Next up for the Highlanders will be Bryn Athyn on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Lions have lost three of their last four games.
