PHOENIXVILLE, PA – The Cairn Highlanders Softball team traveled to Valley Forge for a Skye Division doubleheader on Thursday, taking both games in a dominant performance in all areas of the game, 6-1 & 12-2.
GAME ONE
Cairn (6-22 / 4-8 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) struck first in the top of the 4th inning with senior outfielder
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee High School) hitting a triple to left field that bought sophomore outfielder
Sydney Wright (Souderton, PA / Souderton) on first base around to score. Junior infielder
Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delaware County Christian School) secured an RBI single to third base to bring Shannon home for run number two in the inning.
The string of hits continued in the top of the fifth as sophomore outfielder
Jolene Zefferi (Bristol, PA / Bristol) and freshman infielder
Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) both reached for sophomore catcher
Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty University Online Academy) to drive in Zefferi. Wright doubled to score Brittin before Shannon scored Petroro on a sacrifice fly with Wright scoring on an errant throw. Valley Forge (6-16 / 0-10 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) scored their only run of the game in the sixth on three hits.
GAME TWO
In game two, the Highlanders had an impressive first inning as Petroro leading off with game with a single followed by Wright and Shannon to load the bases. Heacock singled to right, scoring Petroro and freshman pitcher
Evelyn Johnson (Yardley, PA / Calvary Christian) hit sacrifice fly to right field that advanced Wright in to score to make the score 2-0 Highlanders.
Zefferi was walked to start the second inning and later stole for second. Wright was able to bring home Zefferi from second base with a triple to right field (her second of the day). Shannon followed with an RBI double as the Highlanders led 6-0. Looking for a comeback, the Patriots secured a pair of runs in the third, making it a 6-2 ballgame.
Despite the offensive streak by Valley Forge, the Highlanders continued their dominant performance at bat, scoring the two runs right back in the fourth as Wright, Heacock, and Johnson each singled in the frame. Cairn added one more in the sixth and three in the seventh as Wright and Shannon had back-to-back triples to secure the sweep by a score of 12- 2.
NOTABLES
- Wright & Heacock each had five hits on the day, Heacock totaling 3 RBI. Wright had three triples between the two games with a pair in game two, tying Angelia Paskitti & Meagan Maratita's 2017 single game records.
- Shannon had 4 hits in the series with 2 triples, a double, and four RBI, extending her hitting streak to five games.
- Petroro collected four hits to continue her 9-game reached base streak.
- Johnson was almost untouchable in the circle, pitching 12.0 innings between the two games with 12 strikeouts, picking up two wins.
