LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn University Softball team hosted St. Elizabeth for a Skye Division doubleheader on Monday, taking game one 7-5 and falling in game two by the same score with a late Eagles comeback.
GAME ONE
Saint Elizabeth (9-10 / 4-4 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) got on the scoreboard first in their first turn at bat, getting on with a two-out walk and scoring on a single. The Highlanders answered in force as sophomore catcher
Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty University Online Academy) led off with a single through the left side, advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch. Classmate
Sydney Wright (Souderton, PA / Souderton) walked followed by senior centerfielder
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) singling to load the bases. Junior infielder
Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delaware County Christian) singled up the middle to score Petroro and tie the game. Freshman pitcher
Evelyn Johnson (Yardley, PA / Calvary Christian) worked a walk with the bases loaded to take the lead as junior infielder
Julia Bruestle (Abington, PA / Abington) singled to right field to give the Highlanders the lead with Shannon scoring.
Cairn (4-22 / 2-8 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) added four more in the second as Petroro walked to lead off the inning. Shannon and Heacock singled to load the bases with one out for Johnson to hit a two-run double to the left center gap to put Cairn up 5-1. Bruestle put the ball in play forcing the Eagles to make a play resulting in an error and two more runs, putting the Highlanders ahead 7-1. Saint Elizabeth would bring one run across in the third and be held scoreless by Johnson until the seventh when the Eagles threatened and came back to within two before the Highlanders could hold them off for the 7-5 game one victory.
GAME TWO
Game two had the Eagles going up early again but without an answer until the second where Johnson doubled to right to lead off the inning. Brustle mover her over with a single, putting runners on the corners. The double steal was on with the first and third situation to produce the game tying run. Sophomore outfielder
Jolene Zefferi (Bristol, PA / Bristol) beat out in infield single to score Bruestle, moving over on an error and stealing third. Sophomore infielder
Abby McIntyre (Galloway, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) reached on a fielder's choice as Zefferi scored and was driven in a double from Petroro.
Saint Elizabeth came right back in the third with two runs to cut the lead to one. Cairn added one more in the fourth as Shannon doubled to center to score Wright. The Eagles took the lead in the sixth on three hits and three errors before putting the game away in the seventh with an insurance run.
NOTABLES
- Shannon collected four hits on the day going 2-4 in both games with two runs and an RBI.
- Heacock led the Highlanders in the game one victory going 3-3 with a run and RBI.
- Petroro and Bruestle each had two hits on the afternoon.
The Highlanders meet with Valley Forge next on the road Thursday at 4 & 6 p.m. in Phoenixville.
