BB: Wilson Takes High Scoring Game One

CHAMBERSBURG, PA – The Highlanders fell to the Wilson Phoenix on the road, Friday afternoon, in game one of the weekend with a 13-9 high scoring affair.
 
NOTABLES
  • Five Highlanders tallied a pair of hits. Sophomore catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) went 2-5 with an RBI and a run. Junior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) was 2-6 with an RBI. Fifth years Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) and Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) each went 2-4, Fox with two runs and Greenwood driving in a pair of RBIs. Freshman Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) also had a pair of hits (2-3, R, RBI).
  • Sophomore righty Greg Jessup (Tyler, TX / McKinney Christian) threw 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, picking up a strikeout, his fifth scoreless appearance this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cairn (8-11 / 3-4 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) jumped on the Phoenix early, scoring a run in the second as Fox and Greenwood each singled, Schurga driving Fox in on a fielder's choice.
  • The Highlanders added three in the third as Bauers and fifth year third baseman Sam Spdea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) walked, junior outfielder Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) reaching on a fielder's choice at the expense of Bauers on the bases. Greenwood and Schurga came up with back-to-back singles, scoring Wikner and Spadea, loading the bases. Fox would come around to score on an error, putting Cairn ahead 4-0.
  • Wilson (12-3 / 6-1 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) answered right back, scoring a pair in the bottom half on three hits and two errors.
  • The Phoenix would take the lead in the fourth, scoring five in the frame on as many hits, taking a 7-4 lead.
  • Cairn tied it right back, 7-7, as Schurga led off the inning with a single. Freshman centerfielder Zachary Johnson (Hawaii Kai, HI / TCS Post Grad) walked followed by junior outfielder Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) beating out an infield single to load the bases. Bauers came up big with an RBI single to score Schurga followed by Warr scoring Johnson on a fielder's choice. Spadea added another RBI, a double to center field, scoring Jackson.
  • Wilson wouldn't hold back in the bottom half, taking an 11-7 lead on five hits.
  • In the eighth, Cairn would threaten with Spadea leading off with a hit by pitch, scoring on a Fox single. Wilson took the right back in the bottom half, adding an insurance run to their now 13-8 lead.
  • Bauers and Warr singled in the ninth, both getting moved over and Bauers scoring on a pair of wild pitches to cut the lead to four. The lead would remain out of reach as the Highlanders fell, 13-9
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
  • The Highlanders and Phoenix will rematch with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Langhorne (12/2 p.m. EDT).
  • For the rest of the week, Cairn will head to Annville to take on Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday, hosting the Dickinson College Red Devils on Wednesday before conference play continues on the weekend with Rosemont College.
