BRYN ATHYN, PA – The Cairn University Men's Volleyball team finished up play on the road, Tuesday night, as the Highlanders swept the Lions of Bryn Athyn College.
NOTABLES
- Graduate middle hitter Jake Tolar (Fort Mill, SC / Nation Ford) took his turn leading the scoring for Cairn (5-13 / 4-1 UNITED EAST) with 8 kills and 11.5 points, adding two aces.
- Senior opposite hitter Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) was next with seven kills, also adding a pair of aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bryn Athyn (11-15 / 1-4 UNITED EAST) traded serves with the Highlanders early on before Cairn grabbed the advantage, 15-13. The Lions tied the game at 16-all and 19-all before the Highlanders got ahead behind back-to-back kills from senior outside hitter Noah Ruiz Esparza (Levittown, PA / Berean Academy) with was enough to take the set, 25-22.
- The Lions would grab a lead midway through the second set, forcing the Highlanders to push the offensive pace as they were down 16-11.
- Tolar got the serve to start a run back for the lead. J. Poirier, freshman outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu), and junior middle hitter Tommy Ragonese (Buffalo, NY / Royalton-Hartland High School) each had a kill for three straight, tying the set 20-20. Tolar and J. Porier added kills late to take the set 26-24.
- The Highlanders were able to create some distance in the third, running ahead 15-9. Bryn Athyn got into double figures, cutting the distance as they were now only down 19-17.
- Ragonese added another kill with an ace by junior outside hitter Jake Gabriels (Philadelphia, PA / Logos International School) before sophomore setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) put the match away with a kill, closing the third frame 25-22.
GAME NOTES
- With Tuesday's win, the Highlanders secure a winning record in conference play for the fifth-straight season and clinch their fourth consecutive postseason appearance.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Cairn will face off with Wilson College on Wednesday, April 3, which is senior day, for their final conference matchup before the United East Championship Tournament.
