BB: Highlanders Battle #8 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD – The Cairn University Baseball team returned to the northeast, taking on #8 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on Monday afternoon, dropping the matchup 12-1.
 
NOTABLES:
  • Junior outfielder Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) had one of three Highlander hits on the afternoon coming in the form of a solo homerun to right field in the sixth inning.
  • Freshman centerfielder Zachary Johnson (Hawaii Kai, HI / TCS Post Grad Academy) and sophomore backstop Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) each had a hit, Bauers provided a double.
  • Freshman righthander Mikey Gutierrez (Cooper City, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) got the start, pitching 5.0 innings allowing a single earned run on four hits with three strikeouts.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
  • #8 Johns Hopkins (5-3) opened the first with a pair of runs by way of two errors after a double and base on balls, adding another in the third for a 3-0 lead.
  • With a 4-0 lead to climb, Wikner sent a solo shot over the right field fence to put Cairn (4-5) on the board in the sixth inning.
  • In the bottom half, the Blue Jays added three runs to push the lead to 7-1.
  • Johns Hopkins added a five spot on the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
GAME NOTES:
  • Junior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) snapped his 38-game hitting streak on Monday, which was the longest in current era of Cairn Baseball (official hitting-streak records date back to 2014). He retains his on-base streak which is now at 41 games.
  • This was the third straight start for Gutierrez where he has pitched at least five innings and allowed one or less earned run.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
  • The Highlanders open up conference play this weekend as they host the University of Valley Forge on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before their doubleheader on the road against the Patriots on Saturday at 12 & 2 p.m.
