WBB: Highlanders Defeat Keystone 97-60 in Home Rematch

LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn University Women's Basketball team hosted a rematch with Keystone College on Wednesday night in the front end of a doubleheader from inside the Mason Activity Center. This time, the Highlanders took the victory in dominating fashion, 97-60.

Cairn (14-8 / 9-6 United East Skye Division) won the tip and got right to work with a jump shot from junior forward Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood) and three by freshman guard Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville). The Giants made two quick threes and tied the score at eight before freshman guard Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, GA / St. Mary's Academy) buried a three and layup to get the Highlanders back up five. Raines would make two more shots to go up by eight and end the first quarter ahead 23-16.

Keystone (10-13 / 8-8 United East Skye Division) made two quick layups out of the gate in the second frame to cut the lead to three. Cairn then opened up a 13-3 run on the Giants behind an and-one layup and free throw by Raines as well as good shooting from Hinson and Quince, finding themselves up thirteen. The Highlanders continued to push to the end of the half with four points from freshman forward Amalia Vamvakitis (Waterford, MI / Mount Dora Christian Academy) and finishing on a 10-3 run.

In the third stanza, Hinson got her team moving again with a pair of jump shots and then assisting freshman guard T'miya Bryant (Raleigh, NC / South Garner High School) on a layup after stealing a possession away from the Giants, putting the Highlanders up by twenty. Hinson went on to score six more points in the frame, leaving Cairn ahead 68-45 by the end of the third quarter.

Hinson and Raines opened the fourth quarter, combining for six points, Hinson then assisting freshman forward Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) on a layup. As the lead grew, the dynamic duo of Hinson and Raines would find themselves on the free throw line, leading the team to a 91.7% success rate (11-12) from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. As Keystone scrambled to get back into the game, Vamvakitis would hit a dagger from deep and close off the evening with a deep shot for the last make of the game. Cairn took the rematch, 97-60.

Raines once again led in the scoring column, dropping a cool 33 points on 11-20 shooting and 10-11 from the free throw line. Hinson was next with 26 points, 18 rebounds (her season high), and 5 assists. Quince added 15 points and Vamvakitis had 10 with a pair of threes. Bright helped out on the boards, grabbing an even 10 rebounds.

Cairn shot an impressive 90.5% from the free throw line, only missing two attempts all night (19-21). The deciding factor was the Highlanders' ability to run in transition, making 29 fast break points to Keystone's 6.

On another statement win, Head Coach Allen Kuiper remarked: "[It was] a mature performance from a young group of women. The team had very few lapses tonight and I was pleased with their overall intensity from tip to finish". Kuiper records his first winning season at Cairn since taking over last year and the first winning season for the program in almost 20 years (17-12 in 2006-07).

The Highlanders square up next with Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA on Saturday, tipping off at 3 p.m.
