WBB: Raines Scores 33 as Highlanders Drop Conference Bout at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - The Cairn Highlanders Women's Basketball team squared off with the Wilson College Phoenix on the road Saturday afternoon, splitting the season series as they fell 83-76.

NOTABLES:
  • Freshman guard Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, GA / St. Mary's Academy) scored 33 points for the second straight game, shooting 15-17 from the free throw line.
  • Junior forward Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood) also had a high scoring afternoon, netting 27 points and 19 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the year and 30th of her career.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
  • The tightly contested first quarter saw a one possession swing each way with Raines scoring 10 of the Highlanders' 22 points as Wilson (12-12 / 11-6 United East Skye Division) held the 23-22 advantage after ten minutes of play
  • After a fast break and-one layup from Raines and pair of buckets by Hinson, the Phoenix began to build a lead in the second quarter, finishing the half on a 13-4 run.
  • Wilson looked to pull away until Hinson and Raines found open looks on fast break layups to begin to cut into the lead, making it a five-point game with two minutes to play in the third.
  • The Phoenix got running again and extended to a 63-52 lead to end the third quarter.
  • With Wilson ahead by double figures, freshman guard Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville) helped cut into the lead with a pair of layups and Raines provided a layup and three free throws as the Highlanders cut the lead to one, tying the game 74-74 on a layup from freshman forward Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights), directly off of her steal.
  • Sparked by the Cairn (14-9 / 9-7 United East Skye Division) comeback, Wilson finished the game on a 9-2 run as they were put on the free throw line late and took the game, 83-76.
GAME NOTES:
  • With 33 points tonight, and 33 points on Wednesday night, Raines now leads the United East in scoring with 455 points this season.
